About Us

Bella a Cappella is a fun-loving chorus dedicated to musical excellence.

We share the joy of singing four-part harmony through community performances and by representing the Bay of Islands area in National Sweet Adelines competitions.

We nurture friendship, and promote personal confidence through vocal education and disciplined performance.

Bella a Cappella is a women's a cappella chorus based in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand.  The chorus is affiliated to Sweet Adelines International and belongs to Region 35, the New Zealand region of the international organisation.

Bella a Cappella received their charter with Sweet Adelines International in January 2014.  Their musical director is Patti Cooke, who is credited with bringing women's barbershop to New Zealand when she got a group of friends together in Wairoa in the early 1980's, to give the American art-form a try.  Patti is a five times Region 35 quartet champion tenor.

The chorus has competed three times since chartering, achieving a gold medal in their division each time. In the 2017 regional competition, their winning score qualified them for the international Harmony Classic contest, featuring the top five small and mid-sized choruses worldwide. Bella a Cappella came fifth in the Division A Harmony Classic competition in 2018, the second small chorus to compete in the history of Sweet Adelines in New Zealand.
