About Us

Bella a Cappella is a fun-loving chorus dedicated to musical excellence.

We share the joy of singing four-part harmony through community performances and by representing the Bay of Islands area in National Sweet Adelines competitions.

We nurture friendship, and promote personal confidence through vocal education and disciplined performance.

Musical notes

Bella a Cappella is a women's a cappella chorus based in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand.  Our members come from all around the Far North from as far as Kaeo, Russell and the Hokianga.

We have been singing together since 2014. In addition to singing at many local community events, the chorus has competed nationally four times, earning three golds and a silver. In the 2017 national competition we qualified to sing in an international contest which took us to St Louis, Missouri, USA.

Our musical director is Patti Cooke, who has been credited with bringing women's barbershop to New Zealand, although she maintains it was an accident!  She got a group of friends together in Wairoa in the early 1980's to give the American art form a try, and now New Zealand women sing 4-part harmony from Kerikeri to Invercargill.  Patti is a five times national quartet champion tenor and has received international award for her services to women's barbershop-style singing.

We became a chartered chapter of Sweet Adelines International in January 2014, and currently belong to Sweet Adelines NZ.

The Covid pandemic has hit all choirs around the world hard, and Bella a Cappella is no exception. We are delighted to rehearse with no restrictions again. We are keen to rebuild with less focus on competition, aiming to be a skilled choir active in all Bay of Islands communities.

We welcome women who love to sing and are interested in learning about vocal skills and harmony singing.
